D-Prize offers up to USD 20,000 to first-time founders who launch a new organization that distributes an existing, proven poverty intervention. The regular deadline for the 2026 Global Competition is 15 November 2026 at midnight PT (Pacific Time), and an extension deadline of 6 December 2026 is open to applicants who register in advance.
For African founders at any stage, including people who have not yet registered an organization, entry starts with a two-page concept note and a resume. The competition backs a proven idea delivered well, which suits builders who understand a distribution gap in their own market from the inside.

Who can apply?
D-Prize sets out these requirements on its competition page and in its FAQ:
- You are 18 or older. Citizenship is not required, but you plan to live and work long term in the country where you operate.
- Your organization is new. D-Prize says organizations with more than 18 months of full-time operations or more than USD 30,000 in outside funding are typically not supported.
- An existing organization is considered only if its core focus is distributing an existing, evidence-based poverty intervention.
- You can apply alone, and you do not need a registered company or NGO.
- Applicants from low- and middle-income countries are especially encouraged.
- You may submit only one idea per competition.
What does the competition offer?
The 2026 competition offers up to USD 20,000 to launch a new organization that fights poverty through distribution. The amount is a ceiling, not a promised sum. D-Prize describes four stages: a concept note, written questions, interviews, and an award and launch stage in which winners pilot the idea and build toward scale. The pages do not list other benefits, so treat the grant as the offer.
The competition page lists 24 challenge entries. They include childhood diarrhea treatment, reading glasses, water filters, post-harvest support, road safety, government transparency and poverty graduation, along with an open option for a custom intervention that must be proven and evidence-based.
How to apply
- Read the competition page and choose one challenge, or the custom option.
- Download the application packet and answer its prompts.
- Write a concept note of up to two pages (three for a custom intervention) and prepare your resume or resumes. D-Prize asks for PDFs under 4 MB.
- Submit online before 15 November 2026 at midnight PT. To use the later deadline, register first on the extension page and submit by 6 December 2026 at midnight PT.
After round one, the top 5 percent of entrants are invited to answer short written questions within two weeks. Top entrepreneurs then have phone and email interviews. D-Prize aims to respond within 16 weeks of the final deadline.
Advice from the Africapreneurs team
- Start from a gap you can describe firsthand. The challenge list is concrete, so match your own experience of a market, clinic, school or farm to one of the listed interventions rather than inventing a new one.
- Francophone applicants should plan the translation early. Proposals must be in English, and D-Prize says minor grammar errors are not penalized, so clarity matters more than polish.
- Register for the extension in advance if you need the extra three weeks. The 6 December deadline applies only to people who registered first.
- Diaspora founders can apply, since winners can be from anywhere. The test is whether you will live and work long term in the country where the organization operates.
